Voters statewide approve constitutional amendment
An overwhelming number of Louisiana voters approved the one constitutional amendment that appeared on Tuesday’s ballot throughout the state.
The amendment will expand the dedication for the Coastal Protection and Restoration Fund, funneling future funding from offshore alternative energy production into the pool of dollars.
The trust fund was created in 1989 under the name the Wetlands Conservation and Restoration Fund to become the primary source of financing for projects and efforts in the Coastal Master Plan — the playbook created by the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority to address coastal loss and improve hurricane resilience.
In Southwest Louisiana, 64 percent of voters, or 5,142, approved the amendment in Allen Parish; 66 percent of voters, or 9,955 votes, approved it in Beauregard; 74 percent of voters, or 56,981 votes, in Calcasieu; 81 percent of voters, or 2,586 votes, in Cameron; 73 percent of voters, or 9,932 votes, in Jefferson Davis; and 63 percent of voters, or 9,465 votes, in Vernon.
