Rams, Tors headed in right direction

In this edition of the Three Point Stance, staff writers Warren Arceneaux and Rodrick Anderson discuss Week 2 high school football games involving area large schools.

What is the most interesting game?

RA: Ouachita at Sulphur. Sulphur lost two regularseason games last year and one of them was to the Lions. It was one of three games last season that the Tors were held to fewer than 390 yards, so offense will be key against a team that held Richwood to 106 yards last week. The Tors scored plenty (54) last week in there season-opening win over Carencro behind quarterback Morgan Clark, who threw for 348 yards and four touchdowns.

WA: Crowley at Westlake. The Rams have good momentum going after finishing strong last season then winning in the jamboree and regular-season opener. They get a big test this week with the Gents coming in. Crowley reached the Class 3A quarterfinals last year, beat Iowa last week and returns QB Marquis Garrett, who tossed a pair of touchdown passes to Rapheus Joseph.

What is the best matchup within a game?

RA: Iowa’s defense vs. Kinder’s offense. Iowa defense held Crowley in check until the late in the game, holding the Gents to 117 rushing yards and 285 total yards. It will take a similar performance to get a win and to hold back a Kinder team that likes to run the ball. Kinder scored three touchdowns on the ground last week and is looking to put a 30-22 loss to Iowa last season behind them.

WA: Lake Charles College Prep running backs Orenthal Lewis and D’Marcus Miller vs. Rayne defense. Rayne allowed more than 400 yards on the ground in a loss to Welsh last week. The Blazers’ RB tandem produced 206 yards and three touchdowns in Prep’s win over Pickering.

Who is a player to watch?

RA: Barbe RB Zene Chretien. The senior didn’t find the end zone last week, but he did rush for 159 yards on 23 carries. Chretien could see his numbers rise this week against a Riverside team that allowed a pair of Southern Lab backs to gain a combined 360 yards.

WA: Sam Houston wide receiver Tavyen Grice. The speedster has wasted little time making an impact, scoring on the first play of scrimmage at the jamboree, then catching 12 passes for 185 yards in the Broncos’ win over St. Louis last week.
