Officer Involved Shooting – Sulphur Police Department

<p class="p1">On May 2, 2018, shortly after 3:00 p.m., the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations was asked by Sulphur Police Chief Lewis Coates to investigate an officer involved shooting involving one of his officers.

<p class="p1">The preliminary investigation revealed early this morning a yet to be identified white male stole a pickup truck in Vidor, Texas, traveled to Vinton, Louisiana, and burglarized a business. The suspect stole a shotgun and traveled to Sulphur in the pickup truck he stole earlier in Vidor. 

<p class="p1">The suspect crashed and abandoned the pickup truck in Sulphur then stole a small passenger car from a residence. Officers with the Sulphur Police Department observed the stolen car and pursued the vehicle to the community of Carlyss where the suspect crashed.

<p class="p1">The Sulphur Police Department, Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office, and Louisiana State Police established a perimeter and began to pursue the suspect on foot.  The suspect gained entry into a residence and stole another weapon from the residence. The suspect then departed the residence, and continued on foot through the neighborhood.  A Sulphur police officer made contact with the suspect behind a residence, shots were fired, and the suspect was shot in the neck.

<p class="p1">The suspect was transported to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital for treatment.  The suspect did not have any identification on his person and has yet to be identified. The Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations is working to identify him.

<p class="p1">Multiple criminal charges are pending against the subject from the Sulphur Police Department, Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the Louisiana State Police. 

<p class="p1">No officers were injured during this incident.

<p class="p1">This is an active, ongoing investigation and no additional information is available at this time.
