Three Point Stance: Sizing up area’s best linebackers

In this edition of the Three-Point Stance, staff writers Rodrick Anderson and Warren Arceneaux discuss the top linebackers in Southwest Louisiana high school football.

Who is the best large schools linebacker?

WA: Leesville’s Frank Ford had 66 tackles, two sacks and seven tackles for loss to help the Wampus Cats reach the second round of the state playoffs last season.

RA: Sulphur’s Corey Hyatt had a breakout sophomore season last year despite the Tors getting in just five games because of hurricanes and COVID-19. Hyatt, who is also an all-district wrestler, was second on the team in tackles (39) and tackles for loss (5).

Who is the top small schools linebacker?

WA: Jordan Plumley of East Beauregard. Plumley is a jack-of-all-trades who can play along the line of scrimmage or in coverage as needed. Head coach Ronnie Simmons calls him the tone-setter of the Trojans defense.

RA: Hamilton Christian’s Zebeian Doffney was an all-district defensive back last season and will make the switch to linebacker to strengthen the Warriros’ run-stopping power. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound, senior will also be one of the Warriors’ top run-threats.

Who has the best group of linebackers at a large and small school?

WA: Lake Charles College Prep has a trio of talented returnees in Kendrick Pete, Daylon Sibley and Kevon Freeman. Basile has a pair of good ones in Baylor McCoy and Horace Edwards to lead their 4-2-5 defense.

RA: Iota returns all three linebackers to anchor its 3-4 defense in seniors Parker Hayes and Seth Shuff and junior Dayton Moore. The Bulldogs defense finished strong last season, allowing 23 points in its final three games.
