Saints, Hornets hit their stride

STRIKE ZONE

In this edition of the Strike Zone, staff writers Rodrick Anderson and Warren Arceneaux review the week in high school sports.

Which baseball team had the best week?

WA: I’m sticking with St. Louis until the Saints lose. They have won nine consecutive games and are alone atop the District 4-3A standings after winning three league games this past week.

RA: Grand Lake. The Hornets have won seven straight since starting the season 6-8, including three games last week by a combined score of 26-6. The Hornets are ranked second in Class 1A and will face St. Edmund on Tuesday looking to take a two-game lead in the District 4-1A race.

Which softball team was most impressive?

WA: Westlake. The Rams have a dynamic offense that features plenty of speed and power. Myka Lester is a dominant pitcher and the Rams are playing their best ball heading into the playoffs.

RA: DeRidder. The Dragons lost their first District 3-4A game on Tuesday, 5-3 to Buckeye, but rebounded on Thursday with a 3-0 shutout of Tioga to claim the district championship. Ranked No. 3 in Class 4A, the Dragons are poised to make another deep playoff run.

Who is your athlete of the week?

WA: Brooke Tyree led the Sulphur Tors to the girls golf team title at the St. Louis Catholic Invitational, rebounding from an 80 on the first day by shooting a 66 on day two to come back and win the individual title.

RA: Grand Lake senior discus thrower Thomas Delaney launched a personal-best throw of 152 feet, 4 inches on Tuesday to win the event at the McNeese Cowboys High School meet. Delaney will be one of the top contenders for the Class 1A state title. He was fifth in 2016 and seventh in 2015.
