The final dress rehearsals for the high school football season are coming up, with jamborees slated to take place throughout Southwest Louisiana Thursday and Friday.

The games provide coaches a chance to see what they have heading into next week’s regular-season openers.

“It is still preseason for us, we are still evaluating players,” said Kinder head coach Bret Fuselier.

“Last week we were able to see some kids step up in the scrimmage,” he said. “Now they have a chance to earn a starting spot. We are still trying to build depth, especially along the lines. It is a chance to see kids compete for spots and compete against different schools.”

Fuselier said he hopes his team can build off their performance in last week’s scrimmage against Opelousas Catholic.

“We did some good things defensively,” he said. “We were going against a team with a spread offense and we were able to get some interceptions and some sacks. Offensively we were able to drive the ball. Some penalties and fumbles hurt us, but you have to expect that in the preseason.”

The Yellow Jackets will face Oberlin and Oakdale in the Allen Parish Jamboree Friday in Oakdale.

The Lake Area Jamboree is once again spread over two days in Sulphur. Thursday’s games will feature Vinton vs. East Beauregard, DeRidder vs. Westlake and South Beauregard vs. Barbe. The event concludes with three games Friday: Welsh vs. Washington-Marion, Jennings vs. Sam Houston and St. Louis vs. Sulphur.

W-M head coach Freddie Harrison said he is looking for his team to show some intensity.

“I hope to see us playing fast and playing physical,” he said. “It is a great venue to play at and it is great having 12 teams involved. I will be looking for us to execute.

“In the scrimmage (against Sam Houston) we did some things great and there are some things we need to iron out, like the offensive line and running game.”

Harrison said the play of quarterback Marquez Chagois was a highlight.

“His timing was good and he made the reads,” Harrison said. “We need him to get more reps and keep getting more confidence, and for the receivers to catch the ball for him.”
The Lake Area Jamboree will now be just one day, Thursday, with games starting at 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 p.m. All games will be 30-minute running time.
