Sulphur regroups, takes over

SULPHUR — Sulphur gave up big plays early but rebounded to beat St. Louis Catholic 13-3 on Friday at the SPOT Therapy/Billy Navarre Chevrolet Jamboree.

“Their (St. Louis) guys made some good plays on the opening drive,” Sulphur head coach Jeff Wainwright said. “Our defense made some adjustments and got a stop and held them to a field goal.

“Luckily our guys responded in the last 19 minutes to get some stop sand get the ball in the end zone.”

Sulphur senior running back Jaiven Creary used his 205-pound frame to run for 94 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. On third-and-21, in the closing minutes of the game, Creary bowled through the Saints’ defense for a 22-yard score after nearly getting stopped at the 3-yard line for a 13-3 lead.

“He is a big back and did a nice job of breaking tackles,” Wainwright said. “I really loved that run at the end of the game where he was able to break some tackles and you see his weight carry himself into the end zone.”

St. Louis drove 60 yards on its opening drive, including a 42-yard pass-and-catch from Jaleel Goodwin to Benji Chatters. St. Louis was forced to settle for a 37-yard Andrew Kilpatrick field goal. Goodwin completed 4 of 7 passes for 101 yards, including a 49-yarder to Jadon Johnson.

“I was real proud of our guys,” St. Louis head coach Chad Lavergne said. “It was a real good dress rehearsal for next week.

“The special teams did well with the field goal unit. We had some goal line at the end with our backs to the wall. So we got some experience in a lot of different phases of the game that can help us for next week. Sulphur is a very highly potent offense with a lot of high-profile players. Our kids held their own and didn’t back down.”

After Sulphur’s Morgan Clark was picked off by Matthew Houston, the Tors forced St. Louis to punt and marched 66 yards to take a 7-3 lead on a 5-yard shovel pass from Clark to Branden Walker.
