Lake Charles man charged with attempted 2nd degree murder
On Monday, August 20th, 2018 at approximately 10:35 PM, the Lake Charles Police Department responded to the 2200 block of See Street in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival officers located a subject being transported by private means to a local hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds. Officers learned the victim had numerous gunshot wounds.
On Tuesday, August 21st, 2018, Lake Charles Police Department Detectives learned that John Orphey III was responsible for the victim’s injuries. Detectives prepared an arrest warrant for John Orphey III on the charge of aggravated 2<sup>nd</sup> degree battery, which was submitted to Judge Clayton Davis. Judge Davis signed the warrant and issued a bond of $250,000. Detectives and the Lake Charles Police SWAT team began searching for Orphey.
On Wednesday, August 22nd, 2018, Detectives and the SWAT team obtained information as to Orphey’s whereabouts and began surveillance. During the surveillance, Orphey got into a vehicle and was later stopped in the 3500 block of 5<sup>th</sup> Avenue. Orphey was arrested without incident.
The charges on Orphey were upgraded to attempted 2<sup>nd</sup> degree murder due to the ongoing investigation and condition of the victim, currently listed in stable but critical condition at a local hospital.
