Second arrest made in Ernest Street homicide

A second arrest has been made in last month’s Ernest Street homicide.

Lake Charles Police Deputy Chief Kevin Kirkum said a 16-year-old was arrested early Tuesday morning with the assistance of the Lafayette Sheriff’s Office in Carencro.

Kirkum said just before 10 p.m. Saturday, June 22, officers responded to reports of multiple gunshots fired and a victim lying in a parking lot in the 2700 block of Ernest Street

The victim, 23-year-old Jaden Cade Weber of Sulphur, was discovered with apparent gunshot wounds. He succumbed to his injures the following day.

Jemarques Malachi Chapman, 18, of Lafayette was arrested June 28 in connection with the homicide. The arrest was made with the assistance of the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office in Eunice for first-degree murder.

His bond has been set at $1 million.
