Country music artist bringing classic tunes to Delta Downs

Country music artist Mark Chesnutt will perform at Delta Downs in Vinton on Saturday, July 29, and he promises to bring a concert full of old-school honky-tonk sounds to his fans.

Chesnutt burst onto the country music scene in 1990 with the hit “Too Cold at Home,” and he has remained true to that unique, classic country sound ever since.

With his first new album in eight years, “Tradition Lives,” the crooner said he wanted to reach out to his steadfast fans, who have continued to follow him throughout his career.

“This is what I do. It’s always been my style, and no matter what the trends are I am going to keep doing things in my style,” he said.

“There is no way anyone could get me to do my music any other way.”

Chesnutt said that in recent years, he has seen a rise in the attendance of his concerts thanks in part to the power of the internet. He said some of his oldest hits have found new life on YouTube and that he has developed a new wave of fans because of it.

“It’s really interesting to see the internet work like that,” he said. “People have been posting a lot of my old songs and even clips from my old concerts, and it’s fun to see a new interest emerge in the classic country sounds.”

The concert in Vinton will be the first time for Chesnutt to visit that area of Louisiana in years, but he said that living in Beaumont, Texas, keeps him close to all the charms the state has to offer, from crawfish boils to Cajun music.

“It’s almost like there is more Louisiana than Texas in Beaumont, and since part of my heritage is Louisiana that is just fine by me,” he said.

For fans who will be attending Saturday’s concert, Chesnutt promised a fun-filled night with plenty of opportunity to get up and dance.

“It’s going to be a time trip back to the ’80s, with lots of two-stepping dance music and just some good ol’ honky-tonk,” he said.

“I’m really looking forward to bringing the party back to Vinton, and I expect to have a great night performing with some old friends.”
