Concert to feature Mickey Smith Jr.’s Sax in the City and student musicians
CSE Federal Credit Union will present its sixth annual “An Afternoon with Music-Makers” at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 18, in the Bucaneer Room of the Lake Charles Civic Center. The free event will feature instrumental and vocal selections from local artists, student musicians and Mickey Smith Jr.’s Sax in the City.
“The community gets a really unique opportunity, a first-class performance and also a chance to see the faces of the young people who have benefited the most from the work of MusicMakers2U,” Smith said.
Smith said he will showcase familiar crowd favorites as well as new selections from his upcoming album to be released next year.
“Those songs have been inspired by my time in the classroom and the work of MusicMakers2U,” said the Maplewood Middle School band teacher.
The MusicMakers, area students who have received MusicMakers2U instruments, will open the event, showing their day’s work after Saturday morning’s workshop. Talented recipients as young as 7 will take the stage, giving the crowd an opportunity to directly see the benefits of the nonprofit.
“It’s all about the kids,” Smith said. “That’s why we’re making it a free event — to connect. We’ll be showcasing through presentation exactly what MusicMakers2U does.”
The concert will also showcase the talent of more seasoned musicians who benefited from the program as students.
“Some of the MusicMakers2U students have gone on to do extraordinary things,” Smith said, describing the talent that will be joining him on stage, including artists who have studied at prestigious music programs across the country.
Doors will open at 2 p.m. for a meet and greet with the artists and an informational session on MusicMakers2U. Monetary or instrument donations will be accepted.
