Cowboys give former Gator second chance

The McNeese State football team announced Wednesday that it added former Florida defensive lineman sophomore Keivonnis Davis to its roster.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Davis was suspended for the 2017 season  after being one of nine Florida athletes accused of participating in a credit card fraud scam.

According to reports citing Alachua County Court records, Davis, 22, failed to meet the agreed terms of his pre-trial intervention which allowed him to avoid felony charges. The reports state that on July 10 the court revoked his Dec. 19, 2017, pre-trial intervention contract after failing to meet four separate terms of the agreement, including admitted possession and use of marijuana.

First-year Florida head coach Dan Mullen announced Davis’ dismissal from the team on Aug. 2.

“We, as a staff, talked to several former University of Florida football coaches and decided to give ‘KD’ a second chance and an opportunity to continue his education and playing career,” McNeese head coach Lance Guidry said in the news release announcing Davis’ addition to the roster. “We felt that we can help him grow, not only as a player, but also as a person.”

Davis suffered serious injuries that required surgery due to a scooter accident in September 2017.

The Miami Central product played in 13 games for Florida, starting five, during his 2016 freshman season. He tallied 27 tackles, three tackles for loss and 21⁄2 sacks.

He will join an already experienced defensive line that includes two returning defensive ends with starting experience in junior Chris Livings and sophomore Cody Roscoe.
