Crying Eagle pizza, burger good choices

Most people have heard of green eggs and ham, thanks to the timeless Dr. Seuss children’s book by that name, but how about green apples and pizza?

Order a Crying Eagle pizza at The Bistro at Crying Eagle Brewing and that’s exactly what you’ll get. The Crying Eagle is a 12-inch hand-rolled pizza with bacon, shredded mozzarella, goat cheese local honey, rosemary and yes, green apples, for $11.99. And guess what? It’s out-of-the-box delicious.

The marriage of tart green apples and bacon is an unexpected flavor win. I’m pretty sure if Sam-I-Am tried this pizza, he would be just as hell-bent on getting others to try it as he was his beloved green eggs and ham.

While I had pizza, my husband ordered the Crying Eagle Burger, affectionately known as the CEB.
The Crying Eagle Burger is $10.
Donna Price

It, too, was constructed using a bit of unusual kitchen engineering. The beef patty was topped with lettuce, grilled onions, mayo and bacon jam on an extremely fresh brioche potato bun — but it also came with a fried egg on top of the meat patty.

My pizza had bacon. His burger had bacon jam. We simultaneously deduced that if you want to add something unusual to an entree, like green apples or a fried egg, introducing it with bacon makes it an instant win. He loved his burger as much as I loved the pizza.
The Crying Eagle Pizza is $11.99.
Donna Price

The Bistro opened in April inside Crying Eagle Brewery at 1165 E. McNeese St. Dine in, or enjoy your meal in the outdoor beer garden. Even pets are allowed in the outdoor garden.

In addition to appetizers, eight varieties of pizzas, eight sandwich/burger choices and a children’s menu, adult diners can choose from 12-20 beers on tap at any given time.

The knowledgeable staff is happy to recommend just the right brew for whatever food you’ve ordered. Water and fountain drinks are also available.

Bistro hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday – Thursday and 11:30 a.m. – 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Phone is 337-990-4871.
