OBERLIN — A former Oakdale police officer is facing vehicular homicide and drunken driving charges after he fatally struck a bicyclist with his truck early Saturday, authorities said.

Oberlin Police Chief Grady Haynes said Jerron Willis, 22, of Oakdale was driving along U.S. 165 shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday when his 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck struck a southbound bicycle from behind.

Willis was charged with vehicular homicide, operating a vehicle while intoxicated and possession of alcoholic beverages in a vehicle.

He was released Monday from the Allen Parish Jail.

The victim has been identified as Ryan Geho, 34, of Oberlin. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Allen Parish Coroner’s Office.

Geho is believed to have been riding his bicycle to the Coushatta Casino Resort to meet his wife, Haynes said.

“He (Willis) said he just didn’t see him and by the time he saw him he was already upon him and he couldn’t avoid hitting him.” Haynes aid.

Willis said Geho was riding just left of the white lane of the shoulder.

Willis reportedly tried to revive Geho with CPR.

Parts of reflectors and a bicycle light were found at the scene, Haynes said.

The investigation is still ongoing, Haynes said.
