Sowela Technical Community College has launched its official alumni association.

Karla Hennagin, grants and projects coordinator, said while Sowela has always had a loosely-organized alumni group, the official formation provides an even greater “opportunity for alumni engagement.”

The alumni association is still in its developing stages, Hennagin said, and its main priority at this point is collecting accurate, up-to-date information from alumni to increase communication between the college and its graduates.

Though alumni relations fall organizationally within the scope of the college’s Office of Institutional Advancement, Hennagin said the alumni association will be “designed and implemented” by an alumni advisory council.

The council will meet once the database is complete and will work to ensure the program’s objectives match the priorities and needs of the college’s graduates.

In addition to the goals to be outlined by the council, Hennagin said the college anticipates the association “creating a strong network of professional contacts, continued access to the college’s career services, alumni discounts with local vendors and continued and purposeful engagement activities supportive of institutional priorities.”

Forming the database “should be of great benefit to both unemployed and underemployed Sowela graduates,” Hennagin said. Providing current information could potentially create mentorship opportunities between fellow graduates, she said.

Sowela graduates can provide their contact information online at www.sowela.edu/give/alumni/
