There’s an old U.S. Army TV commercial in which an announcer says, “We do more before 9 a.m. than most people do all day.”

Those words came to mind as I listened to how early the people at Moss Bluff Donuts arrive at work each day to make everything happen at the 857 Sam Houston Jones Parkway shop.

Nary Seak, whose husband Sopheap Seak owns Moss Bluff Donuts, said a crew arrives at 2 a.m. each morning to cook, fry and bake the shop’s tasty treats, which are made fresh each day. Every bakery item that customers see when the doors open for business at 4 a.m. is less than two hours old.

Behind the glass counters are delectable delights like croissants, eclairs, apple fritters and doughnuts of all kinds, but the thing I noticed first when I visited Tuesday were the kolaches. They’re really big. They looked to me like manatees that had swallowed snakes laying adjacent to one another on the tray.
A sausage and cheese kolache with doughnut holes from Moss Bluff Donuts.
Donna PriceDonnaPriceDesign Editor

The second thing I noticed is that there was cold Borden’s strawberry-flavored milk for sale in the beverage cooler. There was white and chocolate milk too, of course, but how often does one see strawberry milk?

In addition to milk, diners can wash down their doughnuts with coffee, soda, water, sports drinks, juice, or high-powered energy drinks.

Moss Bluff Donuts is directly across the street from Sam Houston High School, which makes it easy to find.

Being so close to the school, Nary Seak said they do get student traffic in the mornings, but the shop’s busiest days are Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Seaks, originally from Cambodia, owned a doughnut shop in Houston before relocating here three years ago and opening this one.

During my visit, I sampled one of the sausage and cheese manatee kolaches and some doughnut holes. The kolache bread was fresh and the sausage and cheese were wonderful. The melt-in-your-mouth doughnut holes provided an instant sweet sugar rush.

At Moss Bluff Donuts, customers can dine in or get their goods to go at the drive-thru window.

Prices are reasonable:

A dozen glazed doughnuts is $6.50.

A large kolache is $2.15.

A sausage, egg and cheese biscuit is $2.25.

A small coffee is $1.25.

A small cappuccino is $1.50.
