Mayor’s Arts Awards to acknowledge key contributors to local arts

The 2018 Mayor’s Arts Awards is set for 6 p.m. Nov. 28 at Central School Arts and Humanities Center’s Benjamin W. Mount Auditorium, 809 Kirby St.

Ashli Waldrep, executive director for the Arts and Humanities Council of Southwest Louisiana, said the ceremony acknowledges those who have made major contributions to the arts.

Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter will present awards in seven categories. They include Artist of the Year, Citizen of the Humanities, Citizen of the Arts, Arts Educator of the Year, Patron of the Year, Organization of the Year and the Keystone Award. Residents submit nominees to the arts council, and the winners are chosen by a select independent panel.

Waldrep said the Keystone Award is unique because it highlights someone who typically works behind the scenes with the arts.

“It’s good to honor someone that may not always get recognized for what they do,” she said.

Hunter said in a statement that the local arts and cultural scene “is vibrant and something we are very proud of.” He said the ceremony recognizes some of the “unsung champions who lend their creativity and talents to add color to our area.”

Light desserts will be served after the ceremony. The event is free to attend.

For more, call the arts council at 439-2787.
