Return of ‘Rudolph’ part of LCCB’s 50th season
Lake Charles Civic Ballet is celebrating its 50th season with a well-known Christmas production, along with a collection of beloved original pieces that have been performed throughout the company’s history.
Lady Holly Hathaway Kaough, artistic director for the Civic Ballet, said the two scheduled main events will highlight the company’s mission — giving local artists a platform to develop their craft.
“It’s a celebration for everyone who has supported or participated in the success of our seasons,” she said. “We’re so much more than just a classical ballet company; we want to highlight vocalists, set designers and others who are creative.”
Several performances of “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer” take place in December. School performances are 9:30-10:30 a.m. Dec. 6 and 7.
The Dec. 8 show includes a matinée performance 11 a.m.-noon, followed by a gala performance 6-7 p.m.
All shows take place at Rosa Hart Theatre, 900 Lakeshore Drive.
Kaough said the Rudolph show is one of the company’s best-known productions. Before it was performed at Rosa Hart, other venues included LaGrange High School theater and Bulber Auditorium at McNeese State University.
“It’s so fundamental to our organization,” she said.
“Assemblé 2019” is set for 6-8 p.m. March 23, and 3-5 p.m. March 24 at Rosa Hart. Kaough said every piece represents an original work by the Civic Ballet.
“Hoedown” is a Westernthemed piece and has been performed for generations, she said.
“Louisiana Saturday Night” is a “community favorite” that features lively Cajun music, Kaough said. Chris Miller and Bayou Roots will perform. The first performance was done in the mid-1990s.
“Every time it has brought the house down,” she said.
“Clue” is a piece based on the popular murder mystery board game. Kaough said it relies on audience participation.
The ballet’s spring performance is set for May 19 and serves as an end-of-the-year show for students at Lady Leah Lafargue School of the Dance.
