LC man charged in robberies

A Lake Charles man has been arrested in the robbery of a gas station on Gerstner Memorial Drive, authorities said.

Lake Charles police Cpl. Larry Moss said officers were dispatched to Tobacco Plus, 2626 Gerstner Memorial Drive, at about 12:54 p.m. Saturday in reference to an armed robbery.

Moss said a male subject approached the counter and asked the clerk for a pack of cigars. The clerk checked the person’s state-issued identification card and scanned it into their age verification system, before returning it to him.

During the transaction, the clerk opened the register to make change. The customer then produced a box cutter and robbed the store of the money in the register. Using the driver’s scanned license and video surveillance in the store, officers were able to identify the suspect as 36-year-old Sean D. Riggs of Fourth Street.

Moss said Riggs was located on Monday and apprehended during the execution of an arrest warrant by the Lake Charles Police Department SWAT team.

Riggs has also been linked to an armed robbery at Dollar Tree, 935 Third Ave., on April 12.

Judge Sharon Wilson set bonds of $50,000 on each count of armed robbery, for a total of a $100,000 bond.

The initial investigation was conducted by Sgt. Ben Randolph. Sgts. John Russell and Jeff Keenum and Detective Dustin Gaudet conducted the follow-up investigation.
