Doctor pleads not guilty to assault
A local doctor facing charges of sexually assaulting a patient has entered a plea of not guilty in district court.
Bahman “Ben” Sabbaghian, who practices family medicine and general surgery in Jennings and Crowley, was formally charged and arraigned Monday on one count of misdemeanor sexual battery.
Sabbaghian entered his plea through his attorney, Kevin Stocktill of Lafayette, in the 31st Judicial District Court in Jennings.
Misdemeanor sexual battery, under Louisiana law, is defined as the intentional touching of a person’s breast or buttocks without their consent.
Motions in the case are scheduled for May 28, according to District Attorney Lauren Heinen.
If convicted, Sabbaghian could face a fine of up to $1,000 and/or up to six months in prison.
Several patients in Jeff Davis and Acadia parishes have accused Sabbaghian of inappropriate touching during medical exams.
Despite the accusations, Sabbaghian’s medical license remains active as of Monday, and no disciplinary action is shown on the Louisiana Board of Medical Examiners website.
