NWS Lake Charles weather update: 230 pm Thu 4.12.18

News Release

The threat for severe storms will begin late Friday night in east Texas and central Louisiana and continue into Saturday morning in southeast Texas and southwest and south central Louisiana.

NWS Lake Charles

It will be windy with scattered showers and thunderstorms starting Friday afternoon, becoming more numerous as we head through the overnight hours into Saturday morning. Some of these storms will be capable of producing a few tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds. In addition, one to four inches of rain is expected, so there will be some street flooding during periods of heavy rain as well.

Several rivers continue to flood. Minor flooding is occurring on the Sabine River near Bon Wier and Deweyville, the Calcasieu River near Glenmora and Old Town Bay, and  the Atchafalaya River near Morgan City. Flooding could worsen, depending on where and how much rain falls this weekend.

The timing for severe storms, including a few tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds begins in the late evening hours on Friday in east Texas, and ends Saturday afternoon in lower Acadiana.

NWS Lake Charles

Tides will be above normal on Friday, causing a minor coastal flooding threat. Behind the front on Sunday, strong north winds will cause tides to run below normal.
