American Legion recognizes first responders of the year

In a joint celebration, American Legion Post 370 in Westlake recognized both its 106th anniversary Tuesday night as well as its First Responder of the Year award winners.

“This group we have here tonight are on the fire line every day and we thank them for their service,” Post Commander Charles Aucoin said.

Igor Zadorozhniak was named the 2025 Fireman of the Year. He was presented the honor by Westlake Fire Chief John Duff.

“We’re very fortunate to have world-class firefighters here in Westlake and we used to brag that we had people come from all over the country to work for us, but now we have people coming from all over the world,” Duff said.

Zadorozhniak moved to the area from Ukraine last year. He brought with him 15 years of experience and a master’s degree.

“He’s been nothing but spectacular,” Duff said. “Last year he learned English, learned to write English and went through our academy at a feverish pace. He’s a great example of what a firefighter is at his home and ours, and he’s been nothing but an asset to us.”

S.P. Arnett Middle School Resource Officer Carmen Green was presented the 2025 Lawman of the Year award by Westlake Police Chief Chris Wilrye.

In her letter of recommendation for Green to receive the honor, Principal Denise Whitley said Green’s ability to “connect with both students and staff, offering a calm, approachable presence while maintaining the necessary authority has garnered true trust and respect.”

She said Green has built many meaningful relationships with students that “encourage open conversation and mutual understanding.”

“It is such a good feeling when you walk in school to know that everything is safe, the kids are taken care of, we’re taken care of,”  Whitely said after the presentation. “We really appreciate her.”

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Cpl. Miguel Juarez was presented the 2025 Enforcement Deputy of the Year award by Cmdr. Carter Sittig.

Before joining CPSO, Juarez served 12 years in the U.S. Army.

Sittig said Juarez was nominated for the award for his outstanding service, leadership and positive impact on the community.

“He always shows up for his shifts with a great attitude, always on time and continuously goes above and beyond the call of duty,” Sittig said.

Juarez made more than 100 arrests in 2024, including 30-plus on driving while intoxicated charges.

“DWI arrests require a very meticulous mindset and a task-driven individual, which is what makes Cpl. Juarez an asset to our department,” Sitting said. “He continues to make the roadways a much safer place for the people in our parish by not only removing intoxicated drivers on the roadways but assisting those in need. He’s also been known to stop and assist any motorist in need, no matter what the circumstances.”
