Signing period gets underway

<p class="p1">The final signing period of the school year began Wednesday, with several Southwest Louisiana athletes signing to play at the college level.</p><p class="p3">Leading the way were girls basketball players Jamara Levy of Lake Arthur and Maddisen Martin of Fairview, both of whom signed with McNeese State.</p><p class="p3">A pair of South Beauregard track and field athletes are moving on, with javelin thrower Cole Spooner signing with Northwestern State. Distance runner Alyssa Hollier will attend Louisiana College.</p><p class="p3">Spooner finished fifth in state last year with a throw of of 156 feet, 6 inches and won the District 4-3A title with a throw of 172-2. Hollier has a best time of 13 minutes, 32 seconds in the 3,200 meters and also ran cross country for the Golden Knights. She ran 6:20 in the mile at the district meet last season.</p><p class="p3">Westlake’s Andrew Treme signed to pole vaulter at McNeese. Treme is the defending Class 3A state champion and has a best of 15-6 this season, the top mark in the area. He will be joined at McNeese by Barbe’s Brendan Ford, the Class 5A runner-up in the pole vault last year with a mark of 15-51⁄2.</p><p class="p3">Lake Charles College Prep basketball player Paul Williams will sign with LSU-Eunice today, his coach Mack Guillory said. Williams averaged 12 points and 9.0 rebounds for the Trail Blazers this season and will be part of the first men’s team at LSU-E.</p><p class="p3">Joining the LSU-E women’s team will be Claralee Richard of Sulphur. Richard helped the Tors to a 23-win season and was a first-team all-District 3-5A selection, averaging 12 points and 8.0 rebounds.</p><p class="p3">Sulphur defensive lineman Andrew Anderson signed with Hocking Junior College in Nelsonville, Ohio. Anderson spent the past season playing a post-graduate year at Southern Prep of Lake Charles. Anderson was a two-time all-district selection at Sulphur.</p><p class="p3">Trevon Tillman of Southern Prep, a Vinton graduate, signed to play football at Arkansas Baptist. </p>
