LC College Prep will face some of state’s best

In this edition of the Three Point Stance, Rodrick Anderson and Warren Arceneaux preview the upcoming week of high school basketball.

What is the best boys basketball game of the week?

WA: Scotlandville vs. LC College Prep, Thursday in the first round of the Hamilton Christian tournament. The Hornets lost All-American JaVonte Smart but return another big-time guard in Reece Beekman. The Blazers have good size and depth and Head Coach Mack Guillory’s teams always play good defense. This is a loaded tournament field and the Blazers will get a chance to measure themselves against some of the state’s top teams.

RA: Lake Arthur at Grand Lake. It will be the first match up between these two teams since 2016 which Lake Arthur won 62-61. The Tigers are led by the Levias brothers, Tory and Torrell. Grand Lake is learning to cope without 2,000 point scorer Andrew Young, but has found some new go-to players in guards Kael Delcambre, Luke McCardle and Zeke Verzyvelt.

What is the most interesting girls basketball game?

WA: DeRidder at St. Louis. Two of the area’s top players, Dragon guard Domonique Davis and Saints guard Alexandria Goodly headline this matchup. Davis scored 17 in a quarter against Sulphur last week, draining five threes. Goodly has helped the Saints to a 4-2 start, with the losses coming to Class 5A Sam Houston and Class 4A power Warren Easton. DeRidder is also 4-2, with both losses to Sulphur.

RA: Sulphur at LaGrange. Friday’s match up will be a great preview of the District 3-5A race. LaGrange was young last year, but returns some young stars from last year in junior Nadailyn Carrier, and sophomores Aasia Sam and Jeriah Warren. Sulphur is off to a 6-0 start led by nimble point guard Abby Wyatt, 3-point specialist Addy Tremie and powerful center Mo Patterson.

Name a player to watch.

WA: Sulphur PG Abby Wyatt. The Lady Tor is a slick ball-handler and passer. She creates scoring opportunities for teammates with her vision and anticipation. Head coach Helen Lefevre always gets the most out of her team’s talents and Wyatt’s ability to take care of the ball and create easy shots will go a long way towards the Tors having another good season.

RA: Lake Charles College Prep center Rodney Felton. The 6-5 senior is extremely physical and has plenty of length to cover the lane on defense and grind out points on offense. He dominated the boards in last week’s championship game at the Westlake/Lakeside Bank Holiday Classic with 10 rebounds to knock off the host Rams. Felton is averaging 8.5 rebounds and 9.25 points a game.””THREE Point Shot
