Lake Charles Little Theatre will present “Godspell,” a musical based on the Gospel of Matthew, beginning Friday, April 13.

The production is a retelling of biblical parables but director Greg Stratton said he hopes to “make the stories fresh for a new audience.”

The play will encompass a range of skits and songs from “pop to vaudeville,” said Randy Partin, president of the LCLT board of directors.

The upbeat songs and humorous scenes will appeal to all ages, Stratton said.

“Adults bring your kids and kids bring your parents,” Stratton said.

An “unconventional delivery of a very familiar Scripture” — as Partin described it — “Godspell” is not your church’s Easter program. The simplistic and evolving set is meant to be interpreted metaphorically as the show depicts “people of different backgrounds and ages coming together to share something wonderful in their lives,” Stratton said.

Costumes include everyday attire so participants will view Jesus’ life and impact from a modern perspective.

The original 1970s actors of “Godspell” helped bring life to the production through an improvisational process, according to the book “The Godspell Experience.” Similarly, Stratton gave his actors freedom to “tell the stories in their own way” resulting in a really funny yet “touching and moving” production, he said.

Stratton said he believes “Godspell” will be an “uplifting and a joyous celebration of life” for all who attend.

“Godspell” is the last show of LCLT’s season. Performances will run April 13-15, April 20-22 and April 27-29 at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and at 2:00 p.m. on Sundays.
