The state’s longest active high school football losing streak is over after the Pickering Red Devils went on the road Friday to beat Gueydan 13-12.
That ended Pickering’s 31-game skid that started in the first round of the playoffs in 2020. The last time they won a game was Nov. 20, 2020, a 46-37 road win over Oakdale.
Senior quarterback A.J. Berry averaged 10 yards a carry with 171 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns, including the go-ahead score with 5:38 left in the game on a 60-yard run.
Pickering led 7-0 at halftime.
The Red Devils forced four turnovers — an interception by Ladarius Privitera and fumble recoveries by Tyler Cryer, Xavier Mitchell and Akeem Bennett.
Pickering will look to start its first win streak since winning three in a row in 2020 when it travels to play Montgomery on Friday.
Vinton ended an eight-game win streak with a 22-14 win over Oberlin.
Connor Courmier put the Lions in the lead with a 46-yard fumble return in the third quarter and the defense shut out the Tigers in the second half.
Ground and pound
Friday’s game at Wayne Hooper Memorial Stadium in Moss Bluff featured a lot of fireworks of the rushing variety. Sam Houston’s Drew Bailey and Leesville’s Xavier Ford put on a heavyweight fight as both broke 300 yards and rushed for six touchdowns apiece.
Food had 311 yards on 40 carries and Bailey had 320 on 32 touches.
Ford scored three times in the second half to pull the Wampus Cats within 48-41 with 9:52 left in the fourth quarter. Bailey gave the Broncos some breathing room, 56-41, with a 5-yard touchdown 6:06 left in the game.
Leesville marched 57 yards on 10 plays to the Broncos 8-yard line, but Ford was stopped cold on fourth-and-2 with 3:23 left in the game by Connor Walker, Hunter Dautriel and J’sonte Duhon.
Shootout
Barbe got into a shootout with Airline at home, with the Vikings winning 52-49 on a Ben Jump 23-yard field goal with 1:27 left in the game.
Barbe scored twice in the first 5 minutes of the fourth quarter to tie the score at 49-49 on a 26-yard run by Eric Jones and Jack Sonnier’s 60-yard fumble return.
Barbe sophomore quarterback Jelandon Gray completed 17 of 25 passes for 242 yards and threw two touchdown passes to Luke Leger. Running back Eric Jones scored three times (2 rushing, 1 receiving) 231 rushing and receiving yards, and Jordin Griffin ran for 107 yards on eight carries.
Volleyball
Sam Houston volleyball is off to another hot start at 7-0 and ranked No. 2 in Division II in the more recent Louisiana High School Athletic Association power ratings.
Sam Houston opened the 2023 season 9-0.
