The chairman of the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana has resigned from his position.

Jonathan Cernek had served in the leadership role since being elected to the position by tribal members in 2021 and was more than half way through his first four-year term.

Several persons have contacted the American Press since this weekend concerning Cernek resigning from his seat on Friday. However, phone calls made by the American Press on Monday to various tribal members and other officials were not immediately returned.

Cernek had served on the Coushatta Tribal Council for eight years before being elected as chairman in May 2021. He had previously served as the council’s vice chairman and a council member prior to serving as chairman.

No word yet on who will serve as interim chairman or if and when an election could be held to elect a new chairman to fill the position.

Crystal Williams has served as vice chairman under Cernek’s administration.
