For the better part of three weeks the Cowgirls have been pulling themselves out of an early season hole.

They’ll have to do it again today.

After an ugly performance at home Thursday in a 31-point loss to Lamar, McNeese State goes back on the road to try and get right.

The Cowgirls (8-13, 5-5 Southland Conference) travel to Commerce, Texas, for a 2 p.m. game today against the second-place Lions (9-12, 7-2).

McNeese lost the first meeting with Texas A&M-Commerce 79-71 because of a bad third quarter. Dyani Robinson had 29 points and Laila Lawrence added 21 for the Lions.

“We have got to play better,” McNeese head coach Lynn Kennedy said.

Desire Hansen led McNeese with 18 points, but the Cowgirls committed 23 turnovers. The Cowgirls played one of their worst games in losing 79-48 to Lamar Thursday night.

“I didn’t like our start, I didn’t like our middle and I didn’t like our finish,” Kennedy said. “Everybody was off.

“That wasn’t us. I looked out on the floor and tried to figure out who we were.”

McNeese enters the game tied for fourth in the SLC.

“We need to establish our inside defense,” Kennedy said of today’s game. “We have to be able to play defense without fouling.”

The game pits the top two offenses in the league with McNeese on top at 65.8 points a game. Commerce is right behind at 65.4.

Robinson leads the league in scoring at 17.4. McNeese is led by Paris Mullins at 10 points a game.
