McNeese’s polar opposites: Cowgirls rolling, Cowboys not

McNeese State’s two basketball teams enter today’s doubleheader in Corpus Christi, Texas, from completely opposite ends of the spectrum.

The fourth-place Cowgirls (9-11, 5-3) are riding a season-high four-game winning streak and have their sights set on moving up the Southland Conference standings.

The men have lost six in a row and are trying desperately to get out of last place.

Both have tall tasks today as they take on their counterparts from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The women tip off at 1 p.m. with the men’s game to follow.

“We have a chance to improve our spot in the standings, stay about the same or fall depending on how we do,” Cowgirl head coach Lynn Kennedy said. “It is about us. We have been our biggest problem.”

McNeese will have to slow Alecia Westbrook, who leads the league with nine double-doubles for the first-place Islanders (12-7, 7-1). She tops the Islanders in scoring at 11.5 points a game and leads the SLC in rebounding at 10.1.

The Cowgirls counter with the league’s best offense, scoring 67 points a game despite not having one player averaging more than 11.

As for the Cowboys (5-16, 2-6), things continue to go from bad to worse. They have two three-game losing streaks, a four-game losing streak and now they’re mired a six-game losing streak. The Cowboys are trying to avoid their first seven-game losing streak since finishing the 2016-17 season with eight consecutive losses.

They are in serious danger of not making the postseason tournament, which McNeese is hosting.

Now they must play the Islanders (12-9, 5-3) who are a game out of first. And the numbers don’t favor the Cowboys.

They have lost 13 straight to Corpus dating to Jan. 10, 2012. They are 1-10 in Corpus Christi all-time. The Cowboys are coming off a 70-65 loss at UIW on Thursday, guaranteeing a regular-season losing record. McNeese has not had a winning record since the 2011-12 season.

Corpus men lead the conference in scoring at 80 points a game thanks to a trio of players — Isaac Mushila (14.6), Trevian Tennyson (14.5) and Terrion Murdix (12.8) are in the league’s top 13 scorers.

Christian Shumate leads the Cowboys at 12.1.

McNeese returns home Thursday to play Lamar, which, entering today’s games, has lost its last two games and is winless in eight road games.
