SULPHUR — Sulphur’s Tyler Massey picked the perfect time to score his first goal of the season.

His goal midway through the second half helped jump-start the Tors’ 3-0 win over Barbe and clinch its second consecutive District 3-I championship.

“I told the guys we are not talking about it (district title) too much, but it’s pretty cool to have back-to-back titles,” Sulphur head coach Trevor Foolkes said. “I couldn’t tell you the last time that Sulphur High had that in soccer.

‘It is quite an achievement for those guys, especially the seniors that have been here all four years. It is something to go out on a positive.”

The Tors had several opportunities in the first 40 minutes but didn’t score until the 57th minute on Massey’s goal to the right post off a pass from Robert Campos.

“It was his first goal of the season,” Foolkes said. “That was crucial.”

“We just made some adjustments at halftime. We knew Barbe would change their formation this time from when we played them last time. We just tweaked a few things at halftime, moved a couple of people around and just picked up our overall level of play.”

Campos took over the game after Massey’s goal. In the 69th minute, Campos tries to pass the ball across the front of the goal from the left corner. The ball was deflected by the Bucs’ defense, but Campos knocked in the rebound for a 2-0 lead.

In the 76th minute, Campos got a breakaway, beating a lone defender on the left wing and winning a one-on-one with the keeper for a 3-0 lead.

A minute before Massey’s goal, the Bucs (8-7-3, 2-2-1) had a chance to take the lead, but Sulphur goalkeeper Erick Zuniga stopped Austin Dang’s shot.

The Tors (15-2-4, 3-0-2) are ranked fourth in the latest unofficial Division I power rankings. The regular season ends on Monday, and the playoff pairings will be announced Tuesday.

“To be honest at the end of last season, a lot of people thought this group would not be as successful as last year’s group, and we have proved them all wrong,” Foolkes said. “I am very excited with this group.

“Obviously, it is a different group with a different style of play. I am very excited with what we have coming up in the next couple of weeks.”
