Tigers healthier for Auburn, Tiger tailgaters may not be next week for Tennessee

Fortunately LSU coach Brian Kelly is focusing on this week’s game at Auburn.

And he hasn’t been around LSU that long.

Otherwise he might have time to look ahead to next week and get his feathers ruffled like most LSU fans no doubt are doing.

For on Monday it was announced that the Oct. 8 game against No. 9 Tennessee will be played in Tiger Stadium at the eye-opening hour of 11 a.m. and be televised on ESPN.

CBS has an SEC doubleheader that weekend but chose Auburn-Georgia for its’ 2:30 game and Texas A&M traveling to Alabama for its night game.

So a Tiger Stadium football game will be a tailgater’s nightmare for the first time since last year’s game against Florida.

That one turned out OK, as the Tigers beat Florida in the perhaps the best game they played all season.

As for this week LSU should be close to full strength for its first true road trip of the season and Kelly’s first trip to Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium.

His Tigers should be at close to full strength despite a few injury scares in Saturday’s 38-0 win over New Mexico.

Quarterback Jayden Daniels, who didn’t return after leaving Saturday’s game in the third quarter after being spun violently to the turf. Kelly said after the game he could have returned with what was described a tightening in his back.

“There were not residual effects,” Kelly said Monday. “He’ll be able to practice.”

Starting running back Armoni Goodwin had the leave the game early with a hamstring issue, and, according to Kelly, “It will be a day-to-day situation with him.”

Defensive end B.J. Ojulari and safety Jay Ward sat out the New Mexico game as a precaution, but also should be back.

Ojulari, for sure, Kelly said.

“We’ll see on Jay Ward,” Kelly added. “He’s feeling really good and I think he’s a go for (practice) Tuesday. We’ll probably limit his workload on Tuesday.”

Another safety, Major Burns, will still be out 3-5 weeks with a neck injury.

But the Tigers get a boost back there with transfer safety Joe Foucha, a former starter at Arkansas, ready to make his LSU debut after serving an academic suspension stemming from his transfer.

Kelly said Foucha could make an immediate impact due his experience and has been practicing with the team all along.

It will allow Jarrick Bernard-Converse from safety back to cornerback, although Kelly thought he played well at safety.

“We’d like a little more continuity back there, but on the positive side you’ve got experience,” he said.
