All-Southwest Big Schools: Barbe sweeps MVP awards

Published 8:01 am Sunday, June 19, 2022

For a second consecutive season, Barbe swept the American Press All-Southwest Louisiana Large Schools MVP awards.

Halie Pappion is the softball MVP while Gavin Guidry carried the torch as the baseball MVP following 2021 winner and teammate Jack Walker.

For Pappion, it is her third All-Southwest MVP honor. Only the coronavirus pandemic that canceled the 2020 season stopped her from winning four consecutive times.

In her final season with the Bucs, the Boston College signee went 20-3 with 243 strikeouts in 145 innings and a 1.90 earned run average. At the plate, she batted .487 12 doubles, 14 home runs and 49 RBIs.

She led the Bucs to the Class 5A quarterfinals before losing to West Monroe in a back-and-forth 9-8 game.

In four seasons in the circle, Pappion led the Bucs to the final in 2019 and a state championship in 2021.

Guidry was near impossible to score on in his final season, leading Barbe to the No. 1 ranking in Class 5A and the quarterfinals.

He allowed 22 hits in 45 innings while going 8-0 with a minuscule 0.16 ERA. He had 83 strikeouts and 11 walks.

Offensively, Guidry, an LSU signee, batted .422 with seven doubles, a triple, five home runs, 25 RBIs and 40 runs scored. He was 25-for-25 swiping bases.

Iowa’s Kenzie Singletary repeats as the softball coach of the year, while Sulphur’s Sam Moore is the baseball coach of the year.

Singletary took Iowa to the Class 3A final for a second consecutive season, going 27-7.

She inherited a team that won eight games in 2016 to lead Iowa to the playoffs five out of the last six seasons with a 100-66 career record.

Moore took the Tors to the state tournament for the second time in five seasons. The Tors went 32-8, drawing the No. 4 seed before losing St. Amant 10-7 in the Class 5A semifinals.

Moore is 105-57 since taking over the Sulphur program in 2018.
