SULPHUR — The Class 1A state championship game went extra innings this time, but the result was the same for top-ranked Grand Lake. Oak Grove won 2-1 in eight innings Friday night to beat the Hornets in the final for the second consecutive season.

“There were a lot of emotions,” Grand Lake head coach Tyler Alton said. “I think we left it all out there on the field.

“It was a great game — an eight-inning 2-1 ballgame. Neither club gave up, and it was fun to be part of it.”

Grand Lake is 0-3 versus Oak Grove in football and baseball state championship games in the last two seasons. Both teams move up to Class 2A next season.

“It is not a good recipe,” Alton said. “They got our number. We are both moving up to 2A. Hopefully, we get to do it again.”

Oak Grove won its fifth state championship.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Tigers loaded the bases with no outs and nine-hole hitter Luke Simmons, the game MVP, hit a single to shallow center field to bring home Caden McCarthy.

The Hornets came within 90 feet of tying the score in the bottom half of the inning.

“We didn’t get the timely when we needed them,” Alton said. “In the bottom of the eighth we had runners on second and third and a chance to win it right there. A base hit wins it.”

Grand Lake had another missed opportunity in the first inning, leaving the bases loaded.

Grand Lake (22-7) got on the board in the third. Luke Primeaux led off with a double and stole third base before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Grant Trahan.

The Hornets got another lead-off runner in the fifth inning when Devin David hit a single to the left side, but the Hornets left a pair of runners on base.

After leaving a runner stranded in each of the first five innings, Oak Grove (15-15) tied it in the sixth. Kaleb Proctor hit a single to left with one out and scored on McCarthy’s two-out hit up the middle.
