St. Louis girls repeat as state champs

St. Louis Catholic turned in another dominating performance Saturday at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association state track and field championships in Baton Rouge to win its second consecutive Class 3A girls state championship.

The Saints scored 135 points, beating runner-up West Feliciana by 74 points and eclipsing their 50-point margin in 2021.

Ella Segura, the meet’s outstanding athlete, Tia Reder and Emma Freeman led the way with a combined five individual titles.

Segura won the 1,600- (5:18.49) and 3200-meter runs (12:09.20), while Reder claimed the long (18-5) and triple jumps (37-101/2). Freeman won her third discus (114-11) state title and was runner-up in javelin (130-10) to South Beauregard’s Trinity Spooner (134-4), who won her first title since 2019.

Other St. Louis winners were Myca Trail in the high jump (5-6) and Kenzie Touchet in the 300 hurdles (44.07).

Lake Charles College Prep finished fourth with 42 points, led by Jayla Mason, who won the 200 (24.81) and 400 (56.76).

On the boys side, last year’s champion Lake Charles College Prep finished fourth with 37 points. Mansfield unseated the Trailblazers with 74 points. JaRell Joseph won the 400 (48.11).

Westlake’s Tristan Goodly repeated as the triple jump champ (48-71/4) and was the long jump (22-5) runner-up. St. Louis’ Mason Abshire won the pole vault gold (14-6).

Other area gold medalist included Leesville’s Keeton Johnson (4A, 1,600, 4:31.69), LaGrange’s Jalah Bordelon (4A, 300 hurdles, 46.31) and DeRidder’s Joelle Terry (4A, triple jump, 37-63/4). Iowa won the boys 4×200 (1:27.61), LCCP won gold in the girls 4×400 (3:58.7) and St. Louis won the girls 4×200 (1:41.36).
