Reeves girls take second in state in Class 2A meet

The Reeves Raiders girls were the top-performing area team at the first day of the state championship track and field meet in Baton Rouge, finishing second in Class C.

The Raiders finished with 85 points, 13 behind champion Giblsland-Coleman.

Reeves started strong in the field, with Faith Cauthron winning the shot put (29-71/2) and finishing third in the javelin (96-2). In the pole vault, Maddie Ford placed second (6-0) while Kendyl Gill was third (5-6).

On the track, Hope Cauthron finished third in the 100 (13.24), 200 (28.23) and 400 (1:06.72).

Hackberry was fourth in the girls race. The Mustangs picked up wins from Angelle Delcambre in the javelin (113-4) and Ramsie Racca in the pole vault (6-6).

In the boys Class C meet, Landon Smith of Starks won the shot put (37-01/2). Chad LaPoint of South Cameron won the long jump (21-11/4) and 110 hurdles (16.4), Tanny Beard of Hackberry won the javelin (143-0). Teammates Ely Walker and Justin Vincent also won events, with Walker taking the discus title (141-0) and Vincent the pole vault (10-0). The Mustangs finished third with 57 points. Family Christian won with 108 points.

The lone individual area event winner in Class B was Lacassine’s Aaron Garcia in the boys long jump (21-11/2) The Hathaway girls team of Kaitlyn Sawyer, Alli Crader, Madison Suire and Brea Baca-White won the 4×400-meter relay with a time of 4 minutes, 16.91 seconds.

The meet continues today with Classes 1A and 2A.

Among the athletes expected to compete for honors in the 1A boys meet are Elijah Belton of Hamilton Christian, the second seed in the long jump (22-6) and Bryant Williams of Grand Lake, the top seed in the shot put (48-0).

In the girls meet, Emma Johnson of Oberlin is the top seed in the javelin (112-7½), while teammate Chloe Peloquin enters as the top seed in the pole vault (10-0). Ella Cox of Grand Lake has the top qualifying mark in the high jump (5-0).

Elton’s Mya Harmon enters second in the 100 hurdles (16.37) while Lexi Lewis of East Beauregard is second in the 400 (1:02.7)

In Class 2A, Jaslyn Russell of Oakdale is the top seed in the shot put (38-1½) and Rosepine’s Hanna Sullivan has the top mark in the 1,600 (4:40.44). Second seeds are Oakdale’s Pierre Wade in the high jump (6-2), Vinton’s Brycelyn Bujard in the pole vault (10-0) and the Rosepine girls 4×800 relay team.
