Survey: La. residents who filed insurance claims for damage to homes in past two years split on satisfaction

Research from the Public Policy Research Lab at the LSU Manship School of Mass Communication’s Reilly Center for Media & Public Affairs shows policy holders who have filed a claim for property damage are evenly split between those who are satisfied and those who are dissatisfied with how claims are handled.

The 2022 Louisiana Survey includes two distinct efforts to sample residents of the state and conduct interviews. The Louisiana Survey polled 508 adult residents through traditional telephone-based surveys from across the state to find out how Louisianans view their government and its policies. The survey was conducted from Feb. 21 to March 14, and the total sample has a +/- 5.8 margin of error. Additionally, the Louisiana Survey polled 623 adult residents in a survey administered online. The survey was conducted from March 1 to March 21, and the total sample has a +/- 6.1 percent margin of error. The primary report is based on the traditional telephone-based portion of the study.

Findings from the third of six reports indicate the following opinions on how claims have been handled:

  • Forty percent (40 percent) of Louisiana policy holders filed a claim for property damage in the past two years through their homeowner’s insurance, flood insurance or renter’s insurance.
  • Respondents who said they have filed a claim are split evenly between those who are satisfied (47 percent) and those who are dissatisfied (47 percent) with how their insurance company has handled the claim.
  • Many policy holders believe their insurance rates are rising. Fifty-seven percent (57 percent) of homeowner’s insurance policy holders said they pay more now than a year ago, as do 50% of flood insurance policy holders and 45 percent of auto insurance policy holders. Vanishingly few said the price of insurance has dropped.
  • Majorities of all respondents—not just policy holders—said the cost of homeowner’s insurance (67 percent), flood insurance (74 percent) and auto insurance (72 percent) is higher in Louisiana than in other states.
