Three Point Shot: Lake Charles, Lafayette teams to butt heads this week

In this edition of the Three Point Shot, staff writers Rodrick Anderson and Warren Arceneaux preview this weekend’s high school basketball schedule.

What is the best boys game?

RA: Lafayette Christian at Hamilton Christian, Saturday. Tied at the top of District 4-1A with Elton and Grand Lake, the Warriors will test their eight-game win streak against Division III semifinalist LCA. The Warriors have been hot recently, averaging 91 points in their last four games.

WA: Washington-Marion at LaGrange. The Gators have opened District 4-4A play with a pair of wins and are on a three-game winning streak. W-M’s district opener was postponed to Wednesday night. The Charging Indians are looking for consistency down the stretch, having alternated wins and losses over the last six games.

Which girls game is most interesting?

RA: Lafayette at Barbe, Friday. A battle of top-10 teams will pare down the leaders in District 3-5A. Both teams have been pouring buckets lately with each scoring more than 70 in district games. Each team relies on a high-scoring, guard/forward combo in Barbe’s Mikaylah Manley and Areil Williams and Lafayette’s Chrysta Narcisse and Jahniya Brown.

WA: Lafayette Christian at LaGrange, Saturday. Two reigning state champions meet, with LCA featuring one of the state’s top scorers in Jada Richard. LaGrange is a strong defensive team, allowing 47.5 points per game over its last four. The Gators have won nine of their last 11 games. Richard has two 38-point games in the past two weeks.

Name a player to watch.

RA: Grand Lake’s Blayne Copper. The 6-foot-3 senior dropped in 34 points Tuesday in the Hornets’ District 4-1A win over Basile and extended their win streak to seven. The Hornets have back-to-back home games, today and Friday against Church Point and Oberlin, before a key district game Tuesday at Hamilton Christian.

WA: Basile’s Frida Alvarez is a scoring machine who has surpassed the 1,000-point mark in her career and has a 44-point game this season. She scored 22 points Tuesday night against Grand Lake and will attempt to lead the Bear-cats to a win over rival Elton on Friday.
