Three Point Shot: Elton, Iowa off to solid starts

In this edition of the Three Point Shot, staff writers Rodrick Anderson and Warren Arceneaux review the week in high school basketball.

Which team had the most impressive week?

WA: Iowa took the early lead in the District 4-3A boys race with wins at Westlake and home against Lake Charles College Prep.

RA: The Elton boys started the week with a 69-59 win over Class 3A’s Washington-Marion then opened play in District 4-1A with a 78-32 road win over East Beauregard. The Indians have won six of their last seven games to move up to No. 6 in the Class 1A power ratings.

Name a boys player of the week.

WA: Iowa guard Desamonte Gradney scored 55 points in two games, with a high of 32 in a Tuesday win over Westlake.

RA: Westlake senior point guard Jamaal Guillory scored 48 points in two games to keep the Rams within a game of District 4-3A leading Iowa. Guillory’s signature game was Friday when he led the Rams to a 52-48 win over St. Louis Catholic while scoring or assisting on the Rams’ final 10 points, including 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

Name a girls player of the week.

WA: Barbe’s Areil Williams scored 46 points in two games. She had 26 points in a loss to Southwood on Monday and 20 in a District 3-5A win over Comeaux on Friday.

RA: Jennings’ Jill Fontenot averaged 16.5 points per game as the Bulldogs went 2-0, including a 54-49 over No. 5 South Beauregard Friday evening. The Bulldogs have won seven of their last eight games and are ranked No. 4 in the Class 3A power ratings.
