The McNeese State women’s basketball team will be in San Antonio tonight looking for their first Southland Conference win.

The Cowgirls (5-10, 0-2 SLC) have lost their last two games and three of their last four. They are coming off a 72-61 loss Thursday night at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

The Cowgirls have no one averaging double-figure scoring. Instead, they have three players — Desirae Hansen (9.8), Kaili Chamberlin (9.7) and Zuzanna Kulinksa (9.5) — each averaging nine-plus points per game.

In spite of that, the Cowgirls, relying mostly on the 3-point shot, lead the SLC in scoring (71.6 ppg) but rank sixth in scoring defense (74.9 ppg). The Cowgirls are first in 3-point shooting (31.1 pct.), attempting twice as many or more 3’s than six of the other seven conference teams. That helps account for McNeese being the conference leader in offensive rebounds.

Divine Tanks leads the team in rebounding at 7.1 per game.

The Cardinals (4-9, 0-2), who were predicted to finish third in the conference, have lost their last five games. They are led by the SLC’s leading scorer, Jaaucklyn Moore (16.5 ppg), the lone UIW player scoring in double figures.

Destiny Terrell leads the team in rebounding at 4.5 per game. UIW is second in the SLC in scoring defense (56 ppg). The Cardinals rank last in the conference in free-throw shooting (65.6 pct.).

UIW’s Destiny Jenkins leads the SLC in steals with 2.4 per game.

McNeese leads the series 5-4 but the Cardinals have won the last four meetings, including the last two meetings, both in Lake Charles.
