Sulphur police are investigating an early Saturday morning traffic accident that left two dead.

Major Jason Gully said officers were dispatched to Interstate 10 westbound near mile marker 23 at about 2:45 a.m. Saturday in reference to a vehicle that had struck a tree.

Gully said a 2020 Kia Rio, driven by Xane Johnson of Westlake, was westbound on I-10 when it left the roadway and struck a tree.

As a result of the crash the vehicle caught fire with Johnson and a passenger, Ty Prudhomme of Sulphur, still inside.

The fire was extinguished but Johnson and Prudhomme were both pronounced deceased at the scene, Gully said.
