Eugene “Gene” Joseph O’Quain, age 86, of Sulphur, La., passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022. Gene was born on May 21, 1935 in Sulphur, La. 

Gene proudly served in the U.S. Army for two tours and he worked as a Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Deputy for over 28 years. 

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Hardy J. O’Quain and Ruby LeDoux O’Quain; and two brothers.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Carolyn O’Quain; daughter, Angela Sharp; daughter, Melanie Vandergriff and husband, Lionel; grandchildren, Amber Vandergriff (Brittany), Jacob Sharp, Lauren Cary (Jason), Jarod Sharp, Madison Vandergriff; great-grandchildren, Annabeth and Braxton; sister, Ruby Ann “Annie” Morgan; and a host of nieces and nephews and numerous other extended family. 

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2022 at Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home with a Rosary beginning at 6 p.m. Visitation will resume at 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of LaSalette Catholic Church with The Rev. Timothy Goodly officiating. Burial will follow in Farquhar Cemetery under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home.
