A parishwide sales tax renewal benefiting the Calcasieu Law Enforcement District was approved by voters Saturday.

“I want to thank the voters in our parish for passing the tax renewal for the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office,” Sheriff Tony Mancuso said in a statement to the American Press.  “CPSO is dedicated to providing the highest quality of law enforcement services to our community and this tax, which generates $15 -$16 million dollars a year, allows us to continue to be a progressive department and serve those in Calcasieu Parish.”

The renewal is a quarter-cent sales tax and would be in effect for 10 years, starting Oct. 1, 2023. The funds will pay for maintaining deputy salaries, future drug education programs, operations for the Calcasieu Parish jail and other expenses.

Iowa voters also approved a half-cent sales tax for 10 years that will generate an estimated $430,669 annually for flood control maintenance and improvements, economic development activities, and capital improvements and maintenance to the town hall and town park. The tax will start on July 1, 2022.

Voters approved the tax 195-57, or 77 percent, according to complete but unofficial results by the state Secretary of State’s Office.
