McNeese, WAC talking move

McNeese State is close to a deal that will have the school moving into the Western Athletic Conference and a step closer to the Football Bowl Subdivision according to sources.

While no official offer has been extended to the Cowboys, sources have told the American Press that the sides are in “serious discussions.”

Incarnate Word is also likely to be moving to the WAC, joining four other Texas schools who left the Southland Conference last year for the league — which just this season restarted football competition.

There have been twitter reports earlier today that may have been just a little premature, according to sources.

McNeese officials have stated from the start they were looking for a path to the top football playing division. The WAC, which was a former FBS league but now plays on the FCS level, could move back up quickly.

According to the source, McNeese is not in any talks with any other conference at the present time, though they have had discussions with struggling Conference USA officials recently.

WAC Commissioner Jeff Hurd said in an email to the American Press that the league was meeting this week to discuss expansion but did not know the timeframe of any offers. He did say the topic of the meetings was expansion.

It has been reported that both Sam Houston State and New Mexico State are leaving the WAC for CUSA but that has not been confirmed. Currently both are still active members of the Western Athletic Conference.

This is still a very fluid situation as conferences look to fill spots that have opened thanks to realignment in bigger leagues.
