Movies Under the Stars returns this week with family classics old and new. Free and open to the public, the event will take place each Friday in October at various parks across the parish.

While the event has historically been held at Prien Lake Park, Christine Tarver, Calcasieu Parish Police Jury facility planner, said the parish has added the goal of expanding the expereince to additional neighbohoods across the parish. “We wanted to start giving back to all of the community and not just Prien Lake Park,” she said.

“We branched out this summer and it did great so we’re returning with it that way this fall.”

Mallard Junction Park, 599 August St,, is the newest park to be added to the locations with River Bluff Park, 543 Theriot Road, only recently added this summer.

Each of the films shown this month lend themselves to a festive, Halloween theme, Tarver said. Movie-goers are invited to celebrate the season in real life by coming dressed in costume each week as well. Free popcorn, cotton candy and food trucks with meals for sale will accompany each movie shown on the big screen.

Films begin at 6:30 p.m. but Tarver said 6 p.m. seems to be a good time to arrive to ensure prime seating. “There always seems to be plenty of room, though. Just make sure you bring your blanket!”

Movies Under the Stars kicks off Friday with Eddie Murphy’s “The Haunted Mansion” at Prien Lake Park.

Oct. 15 the event will move to Mallard Junction Park for “Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed” and the series will conclude on Oct. 22 with “Halloweentown” at River Bluff Park. “Halloweentown seemed like a good match for River Bluff because it takes place in a small town like Moss Bluff,” Tarver said.

Residents are invited to bring their own blankets, lawn chairs and food. Movies will be cancelled in the event of inclement weather.
