Take Five: 4-1A, 3-5A district title hunt kicks off

Five things to watch for this week in the world of Southwest La. prep sports.

District Duels: League play begins this week in Districts 3-5A and 4-1A. Last year’s state champion Acadiana is the reigning 3-5A champ, while Grand Lake, Basile and Oberlin shared the 4-1A crown last season. Acadiana (1-2) hosts Sulphur (1-2) on Friday. Grand Lake opens with Merryville on Thursday and on Friday Basile hosts Hamilton Christian (1-1) and Oberlin (1-2) hosts Gueydan.

Citizen Pain: LC College Prep RB TreVonte Citizen has 507 yards and eight touchdowns so far this season. Friday night the Blazers (2-1) host De La Salle (0-1), which allowed only 3 points last week.

Rambling Rams: Westlake QB Jamaal Guillory and RB Brandon Jupiter have run for a combined 785 yards on the ground and 12 touchdowns this season while leading the Rams to a 3-0 start. Thursday night they travel north to face DeRidder (2-1), which is coming off a 28-27 win over Jennings.

City Showdown: New head coaches at St. Louis (Brock Matherne) and Washington-Marion will meet at LaGrange Thursday night. W-M has won two straight to start the season while St. Louis has dropped two in a row.

Top-10: Southwest La. Division I volleyball schools Barbe, Sam Houston and Sulphur will play some top competition this week. No. 5 Barbe hosts Division IV No. 8 Notre Dame on Tuesday, and No. 8 Sam Houston takes on Division III No. 5 Iota on Wednesday. No. 3 Sulphur has a pair of top-10 matchups with Division V No. 5 Westminster Christian today and Division IV No. 3 Lafayette Christian on Tuesday.
