James D. “J.D.” Koonce, 91, died at 4:38 a.m. Friday, Aug. 20, 2021, at his residence.

He was a native of Jonesboro, La. and had been a resident of Sulphur. James was a U.S. Marine Corps Korean War Veteran.

Survivors include his children, Rita Reed of Sulphur, Mike Koonce of Magnolia, Texas, Daniel Koonce of Sulphur, and John E. Koonce of Wellston, Okla.; 17 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Mary Gibbons Koonce; and his sisters, Peggy Ritter and Edith Clark.

Cremation arrangements were entrusted to Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. A private graveside service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 25, in Mimosa Pines Cemetery South in Carlyss.
