OBERLIN — Hurricane victims in Southeast Louisiana are getting a helping hand from students in Allen Parish through donations of fuel, supplies and money.

The Kinder High School Future Farmers of America recently collected and delivered fuel to residents in Lafourche Parish.

Superintendent Kent Reed said Allen Parish schools are also doing their part to help schools and students in St. Charles Parish who have been impacted by Hurricane Ida.

The local schools have adopted St. Charles Parish and are sending aid in the form of fuel, nonperishable food items, cleaning supplies, school supplies and other much-needed items.

“The St. Charles Parish School District helped out the Allen Parish school system after Hurricane Laura,” Reed said. “They conducted fundraisers throughout their district and made a monetary donation to our district. Our goal is hopefully go back there and return the favor that they did for us. ”

Schools throughout the parish will be conducting fundraisers and other events throughout the next few weeks to assist residents in their recovery, he said.

“Their help was very much appreciated here and now we want to help the residents of St. Charles Parish because they were hit real tough,” Reed said.

Many schools, homes and businesses in St. Charles Parish received substainal damage and many areas are still without power, he said. Schools in St. Charles Parish are not expected to reopen till November.

Allen Parish schools will be collecting donations and conducting small school wide fundraisers through Oct. 12.

Students are also being urged to write cards and letters of encouragement or create short videos showing kindness and support to those impacted by the storm. Teachers are also being encouraged to educate students about St. Charles Parish and the impact of Hurricane Ida.
