LSU isn’t likely to get co-starting running back John Emery back this season.

The details are sketchy.

But head coach Ed Orgeron said Monday that Emery would be academically ineligible for this season.

“As of now, John Emery is out for the year, and I’m saying he’s unavailable,” Orgeron said.

How it happened is still a mystery.

There were reports over the weekend that Emery had registered for and taken a wrong class, which the NCAA flagged as not counting toward his academic standing.

Subsequent media reports have refuted that notion and Orgeron was diplomatic when asked if there was a miscommunication between the football’s academic staff and Emery.

“I think compliance, academics do a great job of communicating with us,” Orgeron said. “We meet with academics (staff) every week.

“That’s all I’m going to say about that. But I think they do a great job.”

LSU hosts Central Michigan Saturday at 6:30 p.m. on the SEC Network.

Emery made the trip to Los Angeles for LSU’s season opener against UCLA and the school didn’t learn until the day before that game that the NCAA had ruled him academically ineligible.

Orgeron did not comment on rumors that LSU is appealing or that Emery’s family was considering legal action against the NCAA.

“Right now, he’s unavailable,” Orgeron said. “Things could change. If they do change, we’ll play him.”

LSU could still get some help in the backfield.

Orgeron expects Tre Bradford, who briefly transferred to Oklahoma before transferring back to LSU last week, could rejoin the team this week. He was less optimistic about freshman Armoni Goodwin, who clipped off a 21-yard run on his first career carry against McNeese last week, but came up limping and returned later for only one play.

“I do believe that Armoni is questionable,” Orgeron said. “Hopefully (back) for Mississippi State next week. I think Tre Bradford will be eligible for this week.”

Meanwhile, Orgeron said that LSU will get back at least one and possibly two of the three starting offensive linemen who missed the McNeese game with injuries.

Guard Chasen Hines is definitely back, starting tackle Austin Deculus is a “maybe,” and the other tackle, Cam Wire, is out for Saturday’s game.
