“Cohen Fontenot is a tough kid and does a good a really job and understands the offense,” said Welsh Coach Cody Gueringer. “He’s a workhorse as he will do anything for us, and he bleeds red and black. He’s going to block when he needs to and run when he needs to.”

Welsh took a 7-0 lead with 3:04 in the first quarter when Fontenot scored on a 52-yard run. Welsh was in the red zone twice but fumbled inside the 10 and was stopped at the Vinton 15-yard line on fourth down.

The Lions answered in the second quarter when Lukas Bunting scored on a 4-yard run to tie the score at 7-7 with 10:47 left in the second quarter.

Fontenot scored his second touchdown of the half when he scored on a 7-yard run to give the Greyhounds a 14-7 lead with 5:54 remaining. The next drive saw Bunting scored his second touchdown of the quarter on a 1-yard run to the tie the score at 14-14 with 2:49 to play in the second quarter.

Welsh looked to break the tie early in the third quarter with two touchdowns on their opening possessions. The first was a Legros 11-yard run followed by a Fontenot 12-yard run to take a 28-14 lead with 6:48 to play in the third quarter.

Vinton answered on the next drive when Freddie Budwine was on the receiving end of a 32-yard touchdown pass from Bunting with 5:24 left in the third quarter.

Fontenot scored his final touchdown to seal the win on a 5-yard run with 2:05 left in the game.

“This was a big win for us tonight as Vinton played really well,” Gueringer said. “We couldn’t stop them at times, and we have to be able to finish drives. We have to be mentally tougher than what we are right now as we made too many mistakes.”

The Lions offense was led by Bunting who finished with 268 passing yards by going 18-for-34, 6 rushing yards, and was a part of all of three touchdown scores. C.J. Jack led the Lions on the ground with 36 yards on 12 carries. Logan Beard finished with 11 receptions for 166 receiving yards. Budwine finished with 56 yards on three receptions.

“We did some good things in spots tonight but shot ourselves in the foot a little bit,” said Vinton head coach Lark Hebert. “We had way too many penalties. Our quarterbacks Lukas Bunting and Logan Beard both had good performances tonight.”
