SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — A Louisiana sheriff’s deputy died Friday after his patrol unit was hit from behind at a crash scene.

The Caddo Parish deputy was sitting in the vehicle on Interstate 49, diverting traffic from the scene of a Friday morning crash. The northbound inside lane had just been opened when a driver in a Kia Sorrento struck the patrol car from behind, KTBS-TV reported.

The Kia driver suffered minor injuries.

State police are investigating.

The deputy’s name was being withheld pending notification of his family. He is the second northwest Louisiana law enforcement officer to die on the job within the past two weeks. Webster Parish sheriff’s Sgt. Billy Collins Jr. died July 9 when he was shot while responding to a call in Doyline. He was working his part-time job as a Doyline police officer when he was killed.
